2021-2022
This project delivers the Trent Valley Way, our ambition for a source-to-sea walking path. The latest section is recently completed, following 32 miles of river, a 43-mile walking path weaves through the Trent Valley, as walkers wander through rolling countryside and medieval market towns along the way. Retracing ancient trade routes and crossing nature reserves, this new signposted section of the Trent Valley Way, balances natural with industrial heritage.
Many walk and enjoy the river, they may not know they are on the Trent Valley Way. The path needs looking after, waymarking, and celebrating to all of those who live and walk along its route.
Downstream of Nottingham to Alkborough overlooking the Humber is a long-established route. Funding from the National Heritage Lottery Fund and Tarmac community-funded project meant we could extend the Trent Valley Way upstream across the ‘Transforming the Trent Valley (TTTV) landscape area. Blending in seamlessly, the new section of the Trent Valley Way stretches from Shardlow to just upstream of Rugeley, edging closer towards the Trent’s source in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
This project would have not come to life without the volunteers who spent hours surveying the land, identifying waymarker points, the contractors who took on the bigger repair jobs, the research that has gone into uncovering the Trent’s history, and the landowners who agreed to the walk crossing their land.
The Trent Valley Way has been in the making since the Trent Rivers Trust’s founding days. Fuelled by the fascination of following a river from its source to the sea, it has been extremely gratifying to see this new section completed.
Having spoken to over 200 people during the launch event and having dedicated volunteers and team members walk the path, in a bid to raise vital funds for the Trent Rivers Trust, stands as testimony to the commitment and expected future use of the path.
